Lake Macquarie was today announced as an official Air Race World Championship host city by the NSW Government.

This global event is made possible by $2.5 million funding from the NSW Government who alongside Destination NSW are committed to bolstering demand for accommodation and local business to help to drive regional NSW’s economic recovery.

The world championship race is the fastest motorsport on the planet, attracting the world’s best pilots who race against the clock through a racetrack of inflatable gates at more than 400 kilometres per hour.

The race will be held 18, 19 and 20 November 2022 at which Australian, and defending world champion Matt Hall will receive the opportunity to defend his title on hometown soil.

Hall welcomes the opportunity to defend his title after a two-year racing hiatus, “I’m extremely proud to be racing in Australia again and it’s a privilege to do that right here where I grew up,” he says.

“It means even more to me to be involved in an event that will help get our region through some really tough times.

“The NSW Government funding is extremely generous and a windfall for a big community that really deserves the support. It’s something we can all be very thankful for.

“There is probably more pressure to win at home, but the support from family, friends and fans will carry me through that.

“I’m really looking forward to my grandmother being in the crowd who is in her late nineties. That’s something very special to me.”

Dantia, the economic development company for Lake Macquarie, achieved the funding and successfully negotiated the host city agreement.

Joshua Sattler, chief executive officer at Dantia said the Lake Macquarie region will be showcased on the international stage and attract significant economic, community, tourism and local business benefits.

“Dantia is delighted to announce that it has signed a multi-year host city agreement with Air Race to bring the Air Race World Championships to Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia, in 2022 and 2023.”

The race is also a rare opportunity for locals in the Lake Macquarie and Hunter regions to witness a world championship calibre event at home.
