World Championship flavour flies into Sandown

Australia’s leading Air Race World Championship pilot Matt Hall will headline entertainment at the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge on November 19-21.

Fans heading to the penultimate V8 Supercar event will be treated with aerobatic displays and Air Race World Championship simulation flown only metres above the Sandown infield area.

Hall became the first Australian ever to compete in the Air Race World Championships last year and as a motorsport fan, admires the skill that is required to drive a V8 Supercar at top speeds.

“As an avid fan of all forms of motor racing and having been to the Sydney Telstra 500 last year, I was humbled to be given the opportunity to fly a display at the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge,” Hall said.

“I have long admired the skill and precision that V8 Supercar drivers possess every time they get on the track.

“I hope I can show people the skills I have developed over a lifetime of flying all sorts of aircraft when I fly in the MXS race plane that I used in the Air Race World Championship this year.

“I know a lot of Air Race fans are V8 Supercar fans and I am looking forward to meeting as many of them as possible at Sandown.”

Spectators attending the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge will be given the opportunity to get up close to their V8 Supercar heroes.

Grandstand ticket holders will receive a free Pit Lane Walk before the day’s racing begins on both Saturday and Sunday of the event weekend.

Grandstand and Corporate ticket holders will also have free access to the indoor Advantage Bar and Restaurant that boasts great track viewing, TV screens, food and beverage outlets as well as exclusive driver appearances.

Matt’s latest update

It is now 2 months since the last race. I must admit, I have enjoyed some down time to spend time with my family and get my thoughts together on what we are trying to achieve with Matt Hall Racing.

The family and I have been able to do some pretty special things over the last few months. For the first time in quite a while, none of us are jet lagged and we have managed to get into some form of routine that always makes life a little more tolerable. We have finally started to do some much needed house maintenance and even some gardening! Mitchell is enjoying learning about tools and how things grow and even has his own vege garden now (even eats his own veges straight off the plant!).

We also had the opportunity to spend an entire school holidays as a family and did some pretty cool stuff such as go cart racing, a private tour through the Westpac Helicopter Rescue Centre, including all the kids getting a chance to fly the helicopter simulator and Cam even went for a fly in the Mustang with me (probably one of the youngest people in the Mustang at age 12!). All in all, it has reminded me the importance of having people around you that you love and love you back. When it gets down to it that is what life is about.

I have also managed to take advantage of the slower time in my life to get cracking on my helicopter license. I have now managed to go solo and I am really enjoying the challenge of flying the helicopter well in all types of challenging environments and simulated emergencies. Who knows where this will take me!

Lastly, the planning of what we are about. I have spent a great deal of time thinking, reading and writing about the vision of Matt Hall Racing and our original display company, Inverted Downunder. We have realized that while racing is very exciting, there are in fact a lot of things that we can do in the interim that are enjoyable, rewarding and motivating. We used the Williamtown Air Show to experiment with what we can do next year, and it was a fantastic success. Not only did we put on a great display (in a borrowed aircraft…thanks Grant!), we were able to meet a huge amount of people, sign a lot of signature cards and caps and give the opportunity for people to grab a photo with me (especially with the kids who we work hard to concentrate our motivation towards). We were also able to represent our 2010 sponsor, Massel, by having the aircraft branded up and looking quite spectacular.

We are now working hard on putting together a calendar of events for next year and working on some sponsorship and support deals to see us through the next 12 months until we have more direction about the future of the race (rules, aircraft limits and types etc). If it all works out well, we will hopefully be able to keep both business running parallel, one doing shows around Australia between races, the other travelling the world winning races….and me somewhere between the two enjoying life with my family!

Temora’s Korean Aircraft Showcase to feature #95

In a last minute boon to aviation fans heading to the Temora Aviation Museum’s Korean Aircraft Showcase this Saturday, October 16, Matt Hall will display for those on hand in the race plane he flew in this year’s Red Bull Air Race.

It will be the first time the MXS-R aircraft has been used in an aerobatic display in Australia and just the second time Hall’s #95 has been in action here following the plane’s Australian debut at the Perth round of the Air Race in April.

Hall has spent the last week in Temora rebuilding the aircraft with the Museum’s Chief Engineer Peter Pring-Shambler and jumped at the chance to fly on Saturday’s program that will also feature a Mustang, Meteor and Sabre.

“I have always had amazing support from the people of Temora and the Temora Aviation Museum and I am looking forward to showing off my aircraft on Saturday,” Hall said.

“Peter Pring-Shambler is one of the best engineers that I have ever worked with and he and everyone else down here at the airfield have been looking after me well.”

Hall’s race plane will be used extensively around Australia in the coming year giving many, many Australians the chance to see one of the world’s most manouverable aircraft.

Matt Hall to headline new airshow

In a major coup for North Queensland aviation enthusiasts, Red Bull Air Race pilot Matt Hall has been confirmed as the headline act for the inaugural Ingham Wings and Wheels Airshow on September 3 & 4 next year.

Hall will fly his purpose-built MXS-R aircraft and thrill spectators with high-energy aerobatic routines each day of this exciting new event.

The MXS-R is the same aircraft in which Matt competed as part of the Red Bull Air Race series this year. His amazing and skilful recovery from a potentially catastrophic situation, when his plane clipped the water in Windsor, Ontario, has become the stuff of legend and is one of the most popular downloads on YouTube.

Hall is a brilliant former Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18 fighter pilot who saw combat in the Persian Gulf whilst on exchange to the USAF. He is considered one of the best pilots on the planet and stunned the air-racing world when, in 2009, he became the first rookie to win an Air Race World Championship podium place. He is also the first and only Australian to compete in the series.

The 39-year-old third generation pilot is looking forward to performing in North Queensland and meeting fans, who previously would not have had the opportunity without travelling to Perth or overseas.

“The Ingham Wings and Wheels Airshow is going to be an amazing event and something for the entire community, not just aviation enthusiasts,” Hall said.

“With the Air Race taking a year off in 2011 I want to be able to meet and fly for as many people as possible and this is the perfect opportunity to see the best of North Queensland.

“I am currently developing a new high energy aerobatic display that I will definitely use when I am in Ingham. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

The airshow will be held at the Ingham Airport over the weekend of September 3rd and 4th next year. It is expected to attract spectators from all over North Queensland and further afield. Attendances of 10,000-plus are anticipated for the weekend. There will be a wide range of aircraft and vehicle displays, with a 2-3 hour Air Display each afternoon and entertainment on the Saturday night.

This latest announcement from Matt Hall Racing comes just two weeks after Hall helped launch the 2011 Wide Bay Australia International Airshow in Bundaberg where he will also be the leading act.

“We are working really hard to put together some exciting events and displays in the last few months of this year and then throughout 2011,” Hall said.
