Matt Hall set to star at southern hemisphere’s biggest airshow
Newcastle aviator Matt Hall is set to play a major role in the southern hemisphere’s biggest airshow when he takes flight at the Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exposition at Avalon in Victoria next month.
On the three public days of the airshow (March 4-6), Hall, who swept all rookie records before him when he debuted in the Red Bull Air Race in 2009, will perform a 10 minute aerobatic display in the same racing aircraft – an MXS-R – that he finished second in during the air race’s Perth round in 2010.
With the air race on a sabbatical Hall is enjoying showing the people of Australia the capabilities of his high performance aircraft having flown his high energy display as part of the City of Sydney New Years Eve celebration, the V8 Supercar event at Sandown and the Defence Force Airshow at Williamtown.
While in Avalon Hall will also perform guest speaking duties at the International Aerospace Congress dinner, the Careers & Skills Professional Development and Student Info forums and the Aviators Function.
“I have a really busy week planned but I cant wait to get down there and get into it,” Hall said.
“The Australian International Airshow at Avalon is the centrepiece of airshows in the southern hemisphere and attracts people from all over the world so I am training hard to make sure I can put on the best display possible.
“I’m really looking forward to the Careers & Skills forums too because if I can influence a couple of kids to follow their dream of a career in aviation then I will walk away from the whole event satisfied.”
Later in the year Hall will fly in airshows in the Barossa Valley, Bundaberg, Ingham and at a number of other major events.
Matt Hall to front Wide Bay Air Show billboards
It’s early in 2011 but Matt Hall has already received a career first.
Hall will be the advertising face of the 2011 Wide Bay Australia International Airshow that will take place in Bundaberg from August 19-21.
The three day ‘Barnstorming Bundaberg’ event was launched by Hall in 2010 and now the former RAAF pilot will front advertising billboards in Gladstone and Caboolture.
“It’s pretty bizarre to think I will be standing up there staring down at the traffic,” Hall laughed on hearing of the plan.
“In all seriousness though this is going to be a great event and I hope in some way these billboards can attract more people to the show.”

Australia’s own ‘Top Gun’ to fly at Avalon 2011
Organisers of the 2011 Australian International Airshow have announced the first of the star studded aviation line-up to thrill audiences at Avalon Airport next March.
Former Red Bull Air Race Pilot and Australia’s own ‘Top Gun’ Matt Hall will be among the world’s top pilots to perform at Avalon 2011.
Hall, a former Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18 fighter pilot, is one of Australia’s most accomplished pilots.
The 39 year old has taken on the world’s best pilots in the Red Bull Air Race World Championships and will display his high energy aerobatic routine before an expected record crowd at Avalon.
Hall says he’s looking forward to performing at Avalon 2011 to help mark the 90th anniversary of the Royal Australian Air Force.
“The Australian International Airshow at Avalon is one of the most renowned air shows in the world and I am honoured to be able to be part of it,” Hall says.
“With record crowds expected it gives me a great opportunity
to be able to put on a display for lots and lots of people who might not have had the chance to see my aircraft in action.”
Airshow CEO Ian Honnery says he’s delighted Hall will be part of the spectacular line-up at Avalon 2011.
“Matt Hall is one of the country’s most dynamic young pilots and audiences can expect plenty of excitement from his performances,” Mr Honnery says.
Hall is also hoping his appearance at the 2011 Australian International Airshow will help inspire the next generation of Australian pilots.
“One of the things I am trying to do with Matt Hall Racing is to promote the aviation industry in Australia and especially try to motivate young people who may be interested in a career as a pilot.”
Hall will be guest speaker at a major careers and skills forum being held at the event which aims to encourage students to take up a career in aviation and aerospace.
The 2011 Australian International Airshow will be held from March 4 – 6 at Avalon Airport near Geelong in Victoria.
Matt Hall to headline new airshow
In a major coup for North Queensland aviation enthusiasts, Red Bull Air Race pilot Matt Hall has been confirmed as the headline act for the inaugural Ingham Wings and Wheels Airshow on September 3 & 4 next year.
Hall will fly his purpose-built MXS-R aircraft and thrill spectators with high-energy aerobatic routines each day of this exciting new event.
The MXS-R is the same aircraft in which Matt competed as part of the Red Bull Air Race series this year. His amazing and skilful recovery from a potentially catastrophic situation, when his plane clipped the water in Windsor, Ontario, has become the stuff of legend and is one of the most popular downloads on YouTube.
Hall is a brilliant former Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18 fighter pilot who saw combat in the Persian Gulf whilst on exchange to the USAF. He is considered one of the best pilots on the planet and stunned the air-racing world when, in 2009, he became the first rookie to win an Air Race World Championship podium place. He is also the first and only Australian to compete in the series.
The 39-year-old third generation pilot is looking forward to performing in North Queensland and meeting fans, who previously would not have had the opportunity without travelling to Perth or overseas.
“The Ingham Wings and Wheels Airshow is going to be an amazing event and something for the entire community, not just aviation enthusiasts,” Hall said.
“With the Air Race taking a year off in 2011 I want to be able to meet and fly for as many people as possible and this is the perfect opportunity to see the best of North Queensland.
“I am currently developing a new high energy aerobatic display that I will definitely use when I am in Ingham. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
The airshow will be held at the Ingham Airport over the weekend of September 3rd and 4th next year. It is expected to attract spectators from all over North Queensland and further afield. Attendances of 10,000-plus are anticipated for the weekend. There will be a wide range of aircraft and vehicle displays, with a 2-3 hour Air Display each afternoon and entertainment on the Saturday night.
This latest announcement from Matt Hall Racing comes just two weeks after Hall helped launch the 2011 Wide Bay Australia International Airshow in Bundaberg where he will also be the leading act.
“We are working really hard to put together some exciting events and displays in the last few months of this year and then throughout 2011,” Hall said.
